General, Off Topic / Top 10 Mafia Movies of All-Time
March 16, 2012, 01:49:12 PM
[align=center:1gath7aj]MovieReelsColor.jpg[/attachment:1gath7aj][/align:1gath7aj]

For years, Hollywood has been making "Mafia" movies that have been captivating the audience, by giving us an inside look at the mobster lifestyle. We will take a look at some of the most captivating, heart-pounding, and action-packed mafia movies of all-time. So get ready, because once you take the mobster oath, there is No Way Out.

10.The Departed - This 2006 blockbuster, starring Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg, and Matt Damon, takes you inside a cat-and-mouse game of cops-and-robbers, with Boston's criminal kingpin Frank Costello. As a mole infiltrates Boston's Irish mafia, another tips them off, with information on the investigations going on. With all the twists, turns, and violent surprises, this is a great movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

9. Gotti : "The Rise and Fall of a Real-Life Mafia Don" - This made-for-TV film, made it's debut on HBO in 1996, and has succeeded in large measures. Based on the life the famous mafia boss, John Gotti, the film takes you through his rise in the ranks of the Gambino crime family and how his world came crashing down on him. Actor Armand Assante stars as the mafia don, giving a superb performance, in this real-life story.

8.Mean Streets - Directed in 1973 by Martin Scorsese, a story he lived, as a first generation son of New York's Little Italy. Starring Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel in roles that announced their talents to the world, this film goes inside the lives low-life gangsters, from New York's Italian neighborhood "Little Italy."

7.Donnie Brasco - Release in 1997, this film starring Al Pacino, Johnny Depp, Paul Attanasio, Louis DiGiaimo, and Joseph Pistone, is based on a memoir of former undercover cop Joe Pistone's infiltration into the New York Mob. After years of a mob influenced criminal lifestyle, can undercover Donnie Brasco find his way out and get his own identity back. This is a great film, as it takes a look into the lifestyle, of mafia's "low-level" made men.

6.Casino - This 1995 film is directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, and Joe Pesci, is based on Las Vegas's gambling empire and all that comes with it. The mafia's involvement in Vegas casinos in the 1970's and 1980's is revealed, as it is seen through the eyes, of mobsters Nicky Santoro and Ace Rothstein. The question is can they live through all the greed, deception, and violence?

5.Bugsy - Directed by Barry Levinson in 1991, starring Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, and is based on the notorious mobster Bugsy Siegel. In the 1940's, Bugsy Siegel dreamed of inventing an oasis in Las Vegas, with his creation of The Flamingo Casino. Backed by mobsters Meyer Lansky and Mikey Cohen, who will support Siegel's wild ambition to a point, then after which his life hangs in the balance of violence in a blink of an eye. This is one of those movies that has you rooting for a gangster's success.

4. A Bronx Tale - In 1993 Robert Deniro directed and starred in this film, with a cast of actors such as, Joe Pesci, Patrick Borriello, and Lillo Brancato. Based in the 1960's, this is an excellent story of an Italian-American boy's struggle between the influences of his straight-as-an-arrow father and his mentor a mafia chieftain. Great story-line. "Put em in the bathroom."

3. The Untouchables - This 1987 film, starring Kevin Costner, Andy Garcia, Robert De Niro and Sean Connery, is a fact-based movie about Chicago's Prohibition Era. Idealistic federal agent, Elliot Ness goes to war on the streets of Chicago, against legendary crime boss, Al Capone. This is a definite classic.

2.Goodfellas - This masterpiece, starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Ray Liotta, was directed by Martin Scorsese in 1990. This movie is based on the true-life best seller, Wise Guy by author Nicholas Pileggi, which immortilizes the life of gangster Henry Hill. It takes you through Hill's ruthless rise to power in the 1950's, to his drugged out fall, in the late 1970's. Goodfellas explores the mafia's criminal lifestyle, like no other, and is possibly as good as The Godfather.

1. The Godfather Collection (Part I, Part II, and Part III) - This collection of films by Francis Ford Coppola started in 1971, starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, was the greatest mafia collection ever made. The complete saga of movies is based on Mafia's Corleone Family. It goes from Don Corleone's (The Don) childhood in Sicily, to his son Michael Corleone's rise to power, and the effort to succeed him. The Godfather Part I, remains a towering achievement, while the Godfather Part II remains to be the best sequel ever. This collection is a MUST SEE. You can't become a "Made-Man" without it.

Anyway you want to arrange them; this is a great list of movies that are sure to entertain. Many people may be asking, what happened to movies, such as Scarface and Carlito's Way. Even those are also great flicks, unfortunately they are not classified as mafia films, they are classified as "Gangster" films. See "The Top 10 Gangster Films of All-Time" by CKG, for info on that genre of movies.
