Mafia continues with Mafia 4, which is currently in development. But how far ahead is the game? A new job listing reveals first details.

Back in the day, Mafia was the game. Every cool kid in the schoolyard was playing it, and everybody who wasn't playing it... wasn't cool. Simple. There was even a time when Mafia was cooler than GTA because it was "real mafia stuff, son" – as if we had any clue as kids, but hey... it definitely felt grittier.

A lot of people are starved for a new Mafia game, considering the last one was Mafia 3 released in 2017, and wasn't exactly what we were hoping it would be. Sure, the Mafia Definitive Edition from 2020 was lit, but still... we need fresh blood.

Good thing then that the development of Mafia 4 was officially confirmed, with the game being in very early development. Thanks to a new job listing, we now know more about that.

Mafia 4: Job Listing Reveals Pre-Production Status & Unreal Engine 5

This is another one of my favorite reveals, the LinkedIn reveal. Developer Hangar 13 posted a job listing looking for a programmer to work on "an unannounced multi-platform game currently in pre-production using Unreal Engine 5."

Since it's highly unlikely, that Hangar 13 is working on another AAA game outside of Mafia 4, this will most likely refer to that title. This confirms the previous rumor that the game is made in Unreal Engine 5 and the game is currently in pre-production.

That means, that fundamental ideas and structures are still being put in place and planned out, the team is being put together. So Mafia 4 will still be a while away, we expect that it will take three to four more years for the game to be finished and released.

What We Know About Mafia 4

The codename for Mafia 4 is apparently Nero, according to a report by Kotaku. And the game's story sounds like it will make a lot of fans happy, because it's taking us back to the roots: Mafia 4 will be a prequel, that centers on the rise of the Salieri family.

Salieri is, of course, the name and head of the family in which you start your criminal life in the original Mafia and new leaks suggest that it is you who will experience his early criminal life.

The Salieris were born in Italy though, and according to XboxEra co-founder Nick Baker in a recent episode of the XboxEra podcast, that means Mafia 4 will be set in Sicily over the years 1890 to 1920.

Such a setting instantly conjures up images of The Godfather trilogy, more specifically The Godfather 2. That one was partly a prequel following the rise of Don Corleone, first in Italy, then in America. Mafia could be going down a similar route. If it's gonna offer us a setting like this, we'll definitely not refuse it.
